Everyday Embellishments
Recently, I finished reading the book, “A Million Little Pieces”. The controversy surrounding this book was over the author, James Frey, who later admitted he embellished the story or made part of it up. The question that’s begging to be asked is why does this bother people so much?
I was having this conversation with an acquaintance and he agreed. He pointed out that the media slants and embellishes the news. People continue to pay attention to it. We don’t hear too many people pointing this out.
Religion is embellished and made up and yet people continue to go to church on Sunday. We don’t hear too many people complaining about that. In fact, most church-goers are ok with this.
How many people are completely honest on their resumes? Probably not many, because most are embellished and some are even made up. People do this because they want to land a good job.
Our politicians make up stories to get themselves out of trouble. They embellish reports – some of them out and out lie. The only people pointing this out would be those representing the other party (and that goes for both parties).
In a society where most of our day-to-day lives are embellished or made up, I think we owe James Frey an apology. He’s no different from the rest of us. Those who really owe him an apology are the people who slam his work even though they’ve never read it. If they had, they would know that only part of it was made up.
Regardless of whether it’s fact or fiction, it’s one of the most human and spiritual books ever written. If you don’t believe me, then read it yourself.
